AIM Segmentation

To use 3D printing or virtual reality in pre-surgical planning, the Advanced Imaging and Modeling (AIM) Lab has perfected its process of converting patient specific medical images (CT, MRI) into segmented anatomy that is relevant to the medical decision making pathway.

Request Segmentation Service

Segmentation allows an organ, such as the heart, to be separated out of a CT or MRI dataset to create a 3D model (segment). Once the heart is segmented into a 3D digital file, it can be used in a number of technologies such as any 3D printer or virtual or augmented reality formats.

However, the expertise it takes to successfully deploy a segmentation service is a big lift and a barrier to entry for many imaging programs. Understanding the value of viewing complex anatomies in 3D, the AIM Lab is dedicated to providing this service to institutions outside OSF and to families who need it.

What

The AIM Lab segments hearts at no cost to families or institutions. The lab accepts anonymized datasets from treating physicians, and sends back the 3D model targeting the segments needed for medical decision making. As our internal service has expanded to pediatric surgical oncology, we are accepting requests on a case by case basis in this medical specialty.

Who

The AIM Lab performs this service for cases where the complexity of congenital heart disease would be better analyzed in 3D form. We are unable to perform this service for purely educational purposes at this time.

Why

The AIM Lab believes sharing its expertise with those who would not typically have access to this technology is how it can extend the Mission of OSF HealthCare to serve persons with the greatest love and care across the U.S.
